These wooden pysanky are painted by hand by women in remote villages of the Carpathian Mountains. They paint the eggs in traditional patterns. No two are alike, in both size and pattern, but each is generally about the size of an extra large egg. Have a real size chicken egg. Dimensions: 2/56 inches (6.5 cm)The size and color may be slightly different, because it is handmade. Each egg is individual.

This egg can stand upright for display. It has a flat bottom. You also can display them in a basketwith other eggs. They make a beautiful Spring orEaster decoration or can be used to sit out all year round. They would sit perfectly on a window ledge or on a shelf for display as well.

Many superstitions were attached to pysanky, they were thought to protect households from evil spirits, catastrophe, lightning and fires. Eggs with spiral motifs were the most powerful, as the demons and other unholy creatures would be trapped within the spirals forever. A blessed pysanka could be used to find demons hidden in the dark corners of your house.

And what can we say right now about Ukraine? Our hearts are breaking for everyone in Ukraine. We think especially of the artisans who make these pysanky, and our friend Kyrylo Cherniak, who organizes their shipment to us. He lives in Lviv, in western Ukraine, and he gives us updates on what is happening there.
